City Dear

“Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else.”
― Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities

There’s a park around the corner,
A dainty human construct,
With cobblestone pavements and plastic domes.
There’s a park around the corner
That saves a swing just for me.

Rich magenta petals soak this road
Held captive between
Rows of red brick apartments –
Each one brimming with tales, pain and love.

When the sun departs,
These paths are set alight by the streetlights,
A soft ochre veil on the world,
A warm embrace on those cold nights
When the noise of city life,
Overwhelms that of man.

Memories few do each of these alleys hold,
But these few – I cherish deeply.
For the microseconds, I called this place home,
Were the years my heart held joy.

Dear Ruwi –
How I long to walk
Your streets home again!

“You take delight not in a city’s seven or seventy wonders, but in the answer it gives to a question of yours.”
― Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities

The above poem was written in response to the Wea’ve Written Weekly; W 3 poetry prompt hosted by David @ The Skeptic’s Kaddish. This week’s prompt given by Britta Benson was to ‘Write a poem including the name of a city (town, village).

I spent a few years of my childhood in Ruwi, Muscat and while I don’t remember much, it was a very formative period of my life. One thing I remember exceptionally well is a little park just around the corner from where we lived with swings and domes and pavements. I wish I could write better about this place because it’s a time of my life that I hold very close – maybe someday, haha!

Thoughtfully yours,
D

  2. Aww, beautiful poem, I almost felt like I was transported to Ruwi, even if I’ve never been there. It’s amazing to have fond memories about different locations around the globe.
