Call for the grandest of all earthly spectacles, what is that? It is the sun going to his rest.
― Thomas de Quincey

Watch as these shades of red
Taint the world you know;
From the skies to the horizon.
Freckled with clouds bathed in red ombre,
The receding sun – a testimony
To life’s core of mortality.

As the day reaches a close,
With pink-faced thoughts and worn-out dialogues,
Witness how those forged in
The heat of the setting sun,
Fail to wilt under turmoil’s gaze.

Of courage do these final rays sing,
Bravery in its beat,
And a dance to its luminous melody,
With an age-old tale that whispers
Child, let’s soar past these blazing hues
To new beginnings
And ride the sun home
.”

Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.
― Rabindranath Tagore, Stray Birds

This was written in response to the Summer of Stories contest’s second prompt – ‘write a poem about sunsets’. On another note, I’m so happy that the previous entry – A Walk On the Beach’ ended up being the judges’ pick! Please click here if you’d like to check it out!

Have a lovely rest of your week!

Thoughtfully yours,

  20. I love the first stanza; it summarizes the entire piece. And it suggests a kind of haiku treatment for the same theme to me. If I write it, I’ll get back to you. 🙂
